On August 27, 1990 LL Cool J teamed up with legendary producer Marley Marl to create one of my favorite hip hop albums of all time, Mama Said Knock You Out. “Don’t call it a comeback!” 20 years later, we here at KevinNottingham.com have gathered producers and emcees from all over the globe to remix a classic.
It all started 8 months ago with a weekly remix contest challenging producers to flip the original samples Marley Marl used to create the production for the album. 15 weeks later, the winning beats were chosen and the quest to find the right emcees to hop on these joints began.
After 8 months of hard work, I believe we have an album that greatly pays tribute to the original. Special thanks goes out to DJ Blacquestarr, DJ Grain, and Thomas (of KN.com) for helping with the contest. Thank you also to all the producers and emcees involved in this project… job well done. Last but not least, thanks to LL Cool J and Marley Marl for laying the blueprint and providing the inspiration for making this remix album possible.
I hope you all enjoy this remix album…
Ghosting is a project that gives listeners insight on the types of artists and music that inspires Buff1. Giving himself one week to write original material, Buff1 created this free project to be released into the blogosphere. Choosing songs that coincidentally had space for Buff1 to spit, none of the original songs have been edited.
Buff felt there were obvious similarities between the music on this project and one of his favorite Ghostface songs “Holla”; on which Ghost raps over the entire Delfonic’s song “La-La Means I Love You”. Ghosting also happens to be a game where one person follows behind another, mimicking their movements as closely as possible, without being detected.
The Ghostface homage, combined with Buff1 trying his best to follow in the footsteps of the artists who inspired him to write this project, made the title obvious. Lastly, don’t sleep on the exclusive bonus track “Better” produced by Slot-A. Buff1 was inspired by:
Pioneers of the complete total package DIY hiphop plan. Some of the hardest working cats from the GoldenState...The BAY 2 L.A. “These past 3 months have been SUPER exciting for me.. behind all of the other projects i’ve been hard at work completing, I produced an album with a new group I formed.. we are called SMOKEY ROBOTIC… it’s POP.. it’s ELECTRO.. it’s HIP HOP..it’s “4 on the flooor”, there’s some singing.. some rapping.. a few ballads..but above everything else, it’s FUN music.. we were all completely free while making this album, and i’m so proud of it… I want to share it with you.. it’s 12 complete tracks.. bump it in the car, on the ipod during your commute, or anywhere that you want to just listen to music to make you happy….” – !llmind
Dwele really has outdone himself this time. Becoming the true storyteller and the soul provider with his new release W.W.W. Mix of soul and hip hop makes a wonderfully smooth and intelligent sound. Handful of well-placed guest appearances and wise composition of lyrics, ranging from love to politics, makes this a must listen.

Hailing from what we all know to be the mecca of cutting edge comedy and one-man-beat-box-bands, Great Falls, Montana, Mr. Reggie Watts has been picking up steam on the comedy circuit and on the interwebs. Last year his performance of "I Just Want To" went kinda viral... As you can see from the youtube video dude's setup is lo-fi... so the quality of the audio on this download is sub-par demo quality at best.... however the creative content exceeds expectations IMO....
I don't know what the box on our left is... but the box on our right, which the mic goes through before it reaches the other sample, looper, mixer box thingy is a Line 6 Digital Delay modeling guitar effect peddle with built in single loop, w/ overdub feature... I have one of these in the garage, it's a fun box especially in reverse mode which gives you that Jimi Hendrix sound if you can play like Jimi, that is.... more info on the Line 6 Delay here
Morcheeba is out with its new album since June 7th and its titled "Blood Like Lemonade". Its album number seven in the long road of Morcheeba..and its the road of flow and mellow smoothness, like a cool breeze. Very much digging this record. Hope you do, too. Digging in the net i found this awesome Track By Track review with Paul Godfrey and I thought it was very cool and clever so..here it is now for you to enjoy...
P.S. Press play and read :)
blood like lemonade Track by Track with Paul Godfrey CRIMSON I’d always wanted to write stories about characters, but I’d never actually been any good at it until now. I’ve watched so many great movies over the past few years that I’ve managed to get my head around narrative (and it helped working with people like Jim White, Kurt Wagner and Slick Rick, who are all master storytellers), and it all came together on this record. The more I listened to what I’d written, the more I realised I was writing about us, or about me, but through other characters – so the opening line on the record is “On the roadside, by the wreckage”, and it really did feel like that, that Morcheeba was like this burnt-out car that was smouldering, and it was a case of how we were going to pick up the pieces. We had to pimp that ride!
EVEN THOUGH The lines about “the hidden dangers” and being “cast adrift in space” reflect worries about humanity. That was inspired by reading interviews with astronauts – they’d get into space and look back at the world, and couldn’t understand why people were still fighting with each other, and why we were destroying our own planet, that was so beautiful from a distance. The heavy breathing sound is an astronaut breathing in his helmet. He doesn’t have long to live, and at the end his breathing stops. He’s basically just trying to send a message that we should all get along.
BLOOD LIKE LEMONADE That’s about an ex-priest vampire bounty hunter, who goes around seeking revenge on bad guys and bandits, whose blood he drinks like lemonade. It seemed a bit weird at first, but the more I thought about, the cooler it sounded. It’s a strange simile, and the fact that it became the album title is even more bizarre. But vampires are pretty hip nowadays – all those movies where the music is really loud and the characters just whisper the screenplay..
MANDALA That’s Ross doing the harmonica on that. We used to call that kind of stuff ‘Ross left to his own devices’, because he’s such a sucker for that old blues sound – you know, the only thing that would make it sound contemporary would be a hip-hop beat and a bit of scratching. But that has a real charm of its own that we enjoy. I think maybe it’s a tribute to our heritage, it’s about accepting who we are and what our talents are: there’s nothing wrong with having a musical personality of our own, but we just didn’t consider that until seven albums in.
I AM THE SPRING This album started out sounding quite folky, before Skye came back, and there traces of that earlier stage still evident in this track. But we’ve always had folk and country influences, long before the ‘folktronica’ scene came about. We always used to joke, like Tom Wolfe, that if you want to be big, just do what we’re doing five years later. We were always too busy trying to do something new that we never really caught any waves. One of the ways I like to think about this record we’ve just done comes from my love for the Raymond Chandler books, and the way his novels came from short stories that he’d written for magazines, which he then interwove and refined into novels – so you’d have maybe three short stories made into a single novel. It made me appreciate that sort of genius, in a different way: instead of trying to be innovative all the time, why not take what you’re really good at, put it together and make something better than what you’ve already done? That’s something I’ve aspired to on this record.
RECIPE FOR DISASTER That’s another one where I’m writing from a character’s point of view. I used to see the lyrical process a necessary evil – but on this, it was so much more of a challenge to get inside these characters and their motivations, and also to have it slightly tongue-in-cheek, which I think is captured in ‘Recipe For Disaster’. Everybody’s so obsessed with cookery nowadays, and takes it so seriously: you’re not allowed to turn up drunk for a dinner party anymore.
EASIER SAID THAN DONE Skye suggested the idea for the theme and it was sort of written to explain to Skye that I understood how she felt about us, because there were still traces of bad blood left from the split.
CUT TO THE BASS That’s an updated version of the kind of esoteric, instrumental hip-hop thing that we’ve always done.
SELF MADE MAN Nothing teaches us as much as failure – failure taught me a whole lot more than success did, because I didn’t have a clue what I was doing when we were most successful. It’s kind of autobiographical, an acknowledgement that it took the three of us to get where we did. There was a period where we were all so bloody-minded and selfish with each other that the respect and appreciation had diminished. It’s me saying, Yeah, I’m on the other side of all that shit now.
BEAT OF THE DRUM I was hoping to conjure that seafaring vibe on this – it’s the gentle side of Vikings!
Jose has his second album out and its simply put..all about love. Jazzy and groovy love. Its hard to pick a favorite..so I'm just gonna put out the title track.

Since its summer time soul seeks lighter more uplifting music...such as this--- ONRA. A hint of old skool with some romantic vibe in it..but by no means is it cheesy.
